Well it won't retain the information
and then the number

You put the html tag with a lesser than sign encasing the prefix 'sub' and  ending with a greater than sign. beginning tag, them you put the number or letter you want to place a bit beneath the first symbol. Next you put the closing tag which is a less than sigh followed by a forward slash/ then the word sub than a greater than sign>.
